Сім'я - складна система взаємовідносин, у якій її член займає певне місце, бере участь у виконанні певних функцій, своєю діяльністю задовольняє потреби інших членів, підтримує взаємовідносини. Сім'я включає дві основні підсистеми: подружніх та дитячо-батьківських відносин, між якими існують взаємозв'язки та взаємозумовленість. Коли в сім'ї виховуються кілька дітей, виділяється також дитяча підсистема сиблінгових відносин. "Сиблингами", "сибсами" (англ. "siblings", "sibs" - брат чи сестра) називають одного з двох або більше дітей одних і тих самих батьків. Розрізняються сиблінги повнорідні (що мають спільних матір та батька) і неповнорідні, якщо вони мають спільну матір (єдиноутробні) або спільного батька (однокровні). Наукова новизна роботи полягає в тому, що був проведений комплексний аналіз сиблінгів, сиблінгової позиції, розкриті основні характеристики взаємовідносин сиблінгів на різних етапах розвитку, та проведений комплексне експерементальне дослідження впливу сиблінгової позиції на особливості взаємин у шлюбі.

The scientific novelty of the work is that a comprehensive analysis of siblings, sibling position, revealed the main characteristics of sibling relationships at different stages of development, and conducted a comprehensive experimental study of the influence of sibling position on the relationship in marriage.
