Пізня романістика Д. Дефо крізь призму гендерних досліджень

Abstract

UA : Дипломна робота – 57 стор., 79 джерел. Об’єкт дослідження: специфіка осмислення гендерних ролей і стереотипів в пізній романістиці Д. Дефо. Мета роботи: висвітлення ключових механізмів структурування гендерної ідентичності та гендерних стереотипів в романі «Роксана». Теоретико-методологічні засади: теоретичні аспекти дослідження гендерного дискурсу (О. Вороніна, М. Городнікова, Є. Іванова, М. Кіммел, Н. Конопльова, Р. Ліончук, Л. Маргарян, К. Мілет, Дж. Мітчелл, М. Нікіфорова, М. Скорик, Н. Смелзер, К. Вест, Д. Зіммерман, Р. Хоф). Отримані результати: Гендерна ідентичність Роксани є доволі складним конструктом. Її зовнішній шар складається з типових фемінних рис. Роксана вимірює власну цінність крізь призму краси і привабливості. Вона також втілює у собі архетипові страхи чоловіків перед жінкою як матір’ю-землею, спокусницею, маніпулятором і «загадкою». Внутрішнім шаром гендерної ідентичності Роксани є маскулінність. За часів Дефо від жінки очікувалось, що вона буде пригнічувати власну сексуальність і відмовиться від прагнення слави, статку і професійних досягнень, але Роксана не відповідає цим гендерним очікуванням. Вона демонструє розсудливість, фінансову грамотність, ділову хватку і самостійність у прийнятті рішень. Роксана вище за все поціновує свободу. Це відрізняє її від інших героїнь жіночих романів. Відмова від класичної жіночої мотивації (шлюб) перетворює її квест на символ пошуку сенсу буття. Отже, Роксана демонструє андроґінну гендерну ідентичність, одночасно стверджуючи і розхитуючи тогочасні гендерні стереотипи.

EN : The given paper focuses on the peculiarities of representing the gender identity of the main characters in Defoe’s “Roxana” and rethinking the gender roles and gender stereotypes characteristic of the Early English Enlightenment as reflected in the novel. The object of the work can be defined as the peculiarities of structuring the gender identity of female and male characters. The subject is the peculiar character of the realization of this process in Defoe’s late novel “Roxana” (1724). The main aim of the paper is to define the ways, mechanisms and forms of structuring the gender identity of the female and male characters in the novel in the light of the gender roles and stereotypes ascribed to them. It determined the accomplishment of such objectives as: - to systematize the key methodological theses of the theory of gender; - to define the specificity of the gender analysis; - to elucidate the main mechanisms of constructing the gender identity of a female or male characters; - to investigate the data concerning the actualization of the strategies of rethinking gender roles and stereotypes in Defoe’s “Roxana”. Theoretical and methodological foundations of the paper include theoretical studies on the gender discourse conducted by O. Voronina, M. Gorodnikov, E. Ivanova, M. Kimmel, N. Konopliova, R. Lionchuk, L. Margarian, J. Mitchell, M. Nikiforov, M. Skorik, K. West, D. Zimmerman, R. Hoff and others. On the basis of the conducted analysis the following conclusion were drawn. The gender identity of Roxana is a rather complex construct. Its outer layer consists of typically feminine features. Roxana measures her self-worth through the prism of beauty and attractiveness. Her image also embodies the archetypal fears of men against women as a mother earth, a seducer, a manipulator, and a mystery. The inner layer of Roxana's gender identity is masculine in character. In Defoe’s times, women were expected to suppress their own sexuality and abandon their desire for fame, fortune and professional achievement, but Roxana does not conform to these gender expectations. She demonstrates large intellectual potential, financial literacy, business acumen and decision-making autonomy. Roxana appreciates freedom above all. This sets her apart from other female characters in the typical novel for women. The rejection of classical female motivation (marriage) turns her quest into a symbol of an existential search for the meaning of her self. Thus, Roxanne demonstrates androgynous gender identity both affirming and undermining gender stereotypes of the time.
