EN : The work is presented on 61 pages of printed text. The list of references includes 75 sources , 1 addition. The presented paper is dedicated to the analysis of such a topical problem as
the structure, the semantic processes and functioning of the mathematical
terminology in the English language.
The object of the work is defined as the mathematical terminology in
English language. The main aim of the paper consists in analyzing structural,
semantic and functional peculiarities of the mathematical terminology in the
English language. It determined the accomplishment of such objectives as:
– to explore the concepts of "term" and "terminology" in the
works of modern scientists and to describe the main differences between the
term and the commonly used word;
– to identify the classification of terms and to compare and
describe the features of socio-humanitarian and natural-mathematical terms;
– to analyze ways of creating mathematical terms and their types
and to study the semantic features of mathematical terms and features of
their functioning.
The most common ways to create mathematical terms in English are
combination of words and affixation. English-language terminology of
mathematics through the processes of metaphorization and metonymic transfer
absorbs ordinary language. In addition, the mathematical terminology of the
English language includes homonymy, antonymy and synonymy. The functioning
of mathematical terms within mathematics takes place in the fields of knowledge
of mathematics and extends to other fields of knowledge.
