Голдінга “Lord of the Flies” поділяється на лісовий і
EN : The work is pepresented on 65 pages of printed text. The list of references includes 78 sources. The object of the work can be defined as the concept of NATURE and its
figurative and narrative representation in English literary texts of the XX century.
The main aim of the paper consists in an identification of verbalizers of the
concept and describe its conceptual content in a fiction novel.
Theoretical and methodological principles: theory of cognitive metaphor
(J. Lakoff), methods of analysis of conceptual units (A. Vezhbytska, Z. D. Popova,
I. A. Sternin), theoretical principles of objectivization of concepts (A. P. Babushkin,
Y. S. Stepanov, M. F. Alefirenko, V. A. Maslova, A. M. Prykhodko), theoretical
principles of objectivization of the concepts NATURE and LANDSCAPE in the
literature (O. A. Vitruk, N. P. Ivanova, G. P. Pasichnyk, etc.).
Results: according to the classification of the subject of the description, the
landscape in the novel “Lord of the Flies” by W. Golding is divided into forest and
marine (O. M. Sebina); classification by aesthetic value distinguishes the ideal and
turbulent types of exotic landscape (M. N. Epstein). There are four main
macroconcepts: EARTH, WATER, AIR, FIRE, which form the megaconcept
NATURE. The key symbols related to the concept of NATURE were highlighted:
ISLAND, BEAST, SHELL, FOREST, OCEAN, STORM and FIRE. It should be
noted that all natural phenomena in the novel are symbols of savagery, degradation
and destruction of the individual, while artificial – are symbols of civilization and
order. The main tools for expressing the main cognitive models of the concept in the
novel are metaphor, personification and comparison.
