Abstract
Юрасова, J. Irwin, P. Anderson, A. Sundstrom).
EN : The presented paper is dedicated to the analysis of detective prose by A.Conan Doyle in the aspect of creating the image of London. The object of the work can be defined as images of the city in the stories about Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. The main aim of the paper consists in study of the image of the city as an artistic phenomenon and identification of the principles of its functioning in the stories about Sherlock Holmes by A. C. Doyle. Theoretical and methodological foundations: the works of foreign and domestic researchers on the theory of the detective genre (Astrakhan N., Myronyuk L., Perederii S., Perenchuk O., Harlan O.), and related to the study of the works of A. Conan Doyle and the Holmesians (Rasevich L ., Sventsitska O., Yurasova Yu., Irwin J., Anderson P., Sundstrom A.). The criminal world of London is the central object of the image in detective stories. In addition to the atmosphere created by the author through the point-by-point inclusion of elements that create a holistic image of the city in the plot narrative, the nature of social relations plays a decisive role in the perception of this space. The basis of these relations between the population is the motive of taking possession of money. The ways of depicting this idea in the text become decisive for the stories about Sherlock Holmes. Nature becomes a part of the city; it sets the pace of its life, like snow that slows down movement in the city, or rain that makes pedestrians move faster through the streets. It, as an element of the formation of the atmosphere of the city, leaves its mark on the colour palette of the urban space and its shades. The most common colours used by the author to depict the city: gray, black, green.
