Abstract
EN : The qualification work is presented on 63 pages and contains 8 tables and 3 figures. A total of 38 references were used, 29 of them in a foreign language. The object of the study is the surface water bodies of northern London: the tidal reach of the River Thames, the lower River Lea, the Walthamstow and Welsh Harp reservoirs, the River Brent, and the navigable canals. The subject of the study is the level of pollution and the ecological status of these water bodies according to physicochemical and biological water–quality indicators. The aim of the work is to assess the current ecological status of the coastal aquatic ecosystems of northern London by physicochemical indicators, with calculation of the water pollution index (WPI). Research methods: analysis, synthesis, comparison and generalisation; the hydrochemical method of water–quality assessment; calculation of the WPI; and statistical data processing. It was established that none of the seven water bodies examined reaches high ecological status: only the Walthamstow reservoir reaches good status (≈14 %), four objects are moderate (≈57 %), and two reaches of the lower Lea are poor (≈29 %). The leading factor of deterioration is excessive phosphate content: the C/MPC ratio for the Lea and the Brent reaches 11.8. By the WPI, the water bodies fall into classes II–V: the Walthamstow reservoir – II («clean», 0.66), the tidal Thames – III («moderately polluted», 1.53), three reaches of the lower Lea – IV («polluted», 3.66–3.69), and the River Brent – V («dirty», 4.37). The calculated values agree with the official classification of the Environment Agency.
