Abstract
–опрацьовано історію становлення жанру коміксу, окреслено його транзитний характер між масовою культурою та мистецьким дискурсом;
–проаналізовано зарубіжний досвід репрезентації Голокосту в коміксах;
–розглянуто особливості відтворення теми насильства та воєнних злочинів у сучасних українських графічних романах;
–виявлено специфіку репрезентації жіночого досвіду виживання та формування етики турботи як гуманістичного спротиву до насильства;
–з’ясовано механізми роботи коміксів із травмою та пам’яттю, що поєднують документальні джерела, інтерпретаційні стратегії та візуальні форми;
–визначено роль дитячих образів як носіїв травматичного досвіду;
–інтерпретовано символіку анімалістичних образів та зооморфної метафорики у відтворенні досвіду Голокосту;
EN : The master’s qualification thesis «Representation of the Holocaust in Comics by Ukrainian Authors» comprises 71 page. A total of 50 sources were examined in the course of the research. Object of the study: Ukrainian graphic narratives about the Holocaust, including «Hide-and-Seek with Death» produced by the Chernivtsi Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews (text by M. Kushnir, Anna Yamchuk, Nataliia Herasym; illustrations by Anna Tarnovetska), «Ornithophobia. Bolyn» (a project of the «Paths of Memory» initiative by the NGOs «Mnemonics» and «Other Education»), and «Hidden from Death: The Story of Lea Dicker» (documentation of survivor testimonies by Andrii Usach and Anna Yatsenko; script by Liza Sivets; illustrations by Kateryna Hrytseva). Subject of the study: thematic and problem-oriented, imagery strategies of representing the Holocaust in Ukrainian graphic narratives. Purpose of the study: to analyze the specificity of Holocaust representation in comics by contemporary Ukrainian authors and to determine their role in conceptualizing and transmitting historical memory. Throughout the research, the following tasks were carried out: – the history of the comic book genre were examined, resulting in an outline of its transitional nature between mass culture and artistic discourse; – international approaches to representing the Holocaust in comics were analyzed; – the specific features of depicting violence and war crimes in contemporary Ukrainian graphic novels were considered; – the specificity of representing women’s experiences of survival and the formation of an ethics of care as a humanistic response to violence was identified; – the mechanisms through which comics engage with trauma and memory were clarified, combining documentary sources, interpretive strategies, and visual forms; – the role of child figures as carriers of traumatic experience was defined; – the symbolism of animalistic imagery and zoomorphic metaphors in depicting the experience of the Holocaust was interpreted; – the graphic styles of the comics were characterized as instruments for preserving and transmitting memory. Research methods: historical-literary, comparative, narratological and semiotic analysis, cross-cultural method, and elements of discourse analysis. Scholar novelty The scholarly novelty of the research lies in its attempt to integrate the theoretical conceptualization of the comic-book genre with an analysis of its functioning within the Ukrainian cultural space. For the first time, a comprehensive examination of Ukrainian graphic novels about the Holocaust is conducted in comparison with international traditions of representing the tragedy. The novelty also consists in the study’s attention to multiple dimensions of representation: themes of violence and corporeality of trauma within the framework of gender issues, the use of child and animal imagery, as well as graphic styles and colour choices as instruments of memory. As a result, Ukrainian comics emerge not as isolated local projects but as part of a global artistic and cultural dialogue. Practical significance: The results of the study may be applied in the teaching of literary and cultural studies courses, courses on visual culture and contemporary media, as well as educational programs concerning historical memory and the ethics of representing traumatic experience. The findings can be integrated into lecture materials on Holocaust history, educational projects, and cultural memory preservation programs.
