Abstract
EN : The presented paper is dedicated to the analysis of the functioning of allusions to nursery rhymes in the detective prose of Agatha Christie. The object of the work can be defined as the detective prose of Agatha Christie, in which elements of children’s folklore are present. The purpose of the study consists in a comprehensive analysis of allusions to nursery rhymes in Agatha Christie’s detective prose, determining their structural-semantic features and functional load. It determined the accomplishment of such objectives as: - defining the concept of intertextuality in modern literary studies; - characterizing the genre and stylistic features of children’s folklore in general, and English nursery rhymes in particular; - investigating the use of allusions to nursery rhymes in Agatha Christie’s novels and short stories; - determining the functions of these allusions in the studied texts. The research proves that the folklore text in the writer’s work goes beyond the limits of a decorative element and becomes an important means of plot organization. It is ascertained that in individual novels, the poem serves as a direct “scenario” of the crime and contributes to a deeper revelation of the characters’ personalities, whereas in short stories it more often performs the role of a key to the solution or serves to create a tense atmosphere. The combination of naive children’s folklore with a detective narrative allows the author to enhance the effect of suspense through the contrast of form and content. The scientific novelty of the presented research lies in the implementation of a systematic analysis of the functions of children's folklore in Agatha Christie's detective prose through the prism of G. Genette's theory of transtextuality.
