Abstract
EN : This paper consists of 58 pages includes 66 references, 4 tables. The object of the study is the populations of the steppe marmot (Marmota bobak) inhabiting the steppe regions of Ukraine. The subject of the study is the processes of acclimatization, adaptation, and spatial dispersal of the steppe marmot within the steppe zone of Ukraine. The aim of this work was to determine the biological characteristics of the marmot in Ukraine. Visual observation consisted of passive presence at designated sample plots (areas where populations occur) and recording activity as well as counting individuals of the given population. Observations were carried out both with the naked eye and using optical instruments. The counting of individuals was also conducted by surveying inhabited burrows, as well as under artificial conditions (in enclosures). Relevance of the topic. The steppe ecosystems of Ukraine are among the most transformed natural landscapes in Europe. Intensive agricultural development, plowing of virgin lands, urbanization, and other anthropogenic factors have led to a significant reduction in the area of natural steppes and, consequently, to a decrease in the number of many animal species characteristic of this biome. One of these species is the steppe marmot (Marmota bobak), which plays an important role in the functioning of steppe ecosystems. During the twentieth century, the number of marmots in Ukraine significantly decreased due to the destruction of natural habitats, intensive hunting, and other anthropogenic factors. In this regard, there arose a need to implement measures aimed at the conservation and restoration of populations of this species, particularly through acclimatization and artificial resettlement in suitable regions of the steppe zone. The study of the processes of acclimatization and adaptation of marmots to new environmental conditions is important for evaluating the effectiveness of programs aimed at restoring their populations. Analysis of the patterns of dispersal of this species makes it possible to determine optimal conditions for its existence and also contributes to the development of effective measures for the protection and restoration of steppe ecosystems. Thus, the study of acclimatization, adaptation, and dispersal of the marmot in the steppe regions of Ukraine is an important task of modern zoology and ecology, since the results of such research are significant for the conservation of biodiversity and rational use of natural resources.
