Abstract

EN : The research focuses on the chronotopic analysis of postmodern historical prose, using Graham Swift’s novel “Waterland” in particular. The research proves that this novel is an example of historiographic metafiction, due to it featuring such elements as the blurring of the boundaries between fact and fiction and problematization of history. The research identifies key characteristics of the postmodern chronotope, such as the destabilization of spatial and temporal boundaries and the nonlinearity of time. These elements reflect the broader postmodern emphasis on questioning objective reality and exploring subjective experience. Furthermore, the study demonstrates how the postmodern chronotope challenges linear historical narratives, creating fragmented, multi-layered structures that engage readers in reinterpreting history and its representation. The findings of the research demonstrate the genre-defining specificity of the chronotope used in postmodern historical prose, more specifically in Graham Swift’s novel “Waterland”. The novel illustrates how the chronotope functions not only as a structural device but also as a means to problematize conventional historical narratives, aligning with the philosophical underpinnings of postmodernism.
