Abstract
EN : The qualification thesis consists of 97 pages and includes 20 sources. Keywords: moral and psychological state, Army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UNR), personal motivation, service conditions of soldiers, combat operations, ideological work. Object of research: the Ukrainian military contingent from 1917 to 1921. Subject of research: the moral and psychological state of Ukrainian soldiers from 1917 to 1921. Purpose of the master’s thesis: to examine the phenomenon of morale and its influence on the condition of Ukrainian soldiers, as well as to analyze the factors that affected their moral and psychological state during 1917-1921. Scientific novelty: consists in a comprehensive study of the moral and psychological state of the UNR fighters and what factors influenced the MPS during the periods of absence of hostilities in 1917 and during active military campaigns from 1918 to 1921 using the example of personal sources (memoirs). Since the topic concerns social psychology, research on this topic has not been conducted before, due to the fact that emphasis was placed on other aspects of war, however, modern war with all its problems has allowed us to consider the past differently, using the prism of interdisciplinary research. Practical significance: the thesis can be used to study the period of the National Liberation Struggle, in historical research related to psychological exploration of the past, and in military scientific literature as an example of analyzing the psychological state of soldiers. Conclusions: The issue of moral and psychological state is well-developed in psychological sciences because over the past century military commanders have recognized how significantly morale affects the combat capability of both individual soldiers and entire units. In Ukraine, due to ongoing military conflicts, this issue remains highly relevant today. In historical studies on the military history of the 1917-1921 National Liberation Struggle, morale is mentioned only briefly and indirectly, as there was little interest in examining this phenomenon in depth. However, the factors that shape and influence the moral and psychological state have been studied rather thoroughly. The source base made it possible to view the conditions of service in the army from different perspectives and through the experiences of various individuals. During the research, we proposed the following definition of the term “moral and psychological state”: “an individual or group (in the case of a military unit) psychological capacity of a person or group of persons to perform military service or conduct warfare.” The MPS is influenced by many factors that can affect the inner condition of a soldier both systematically and individually. These include some internal factors: personal motivation, discipline, preparedness for war, patriotism, self-awareness and understanding of one’s capabilities, trust in comrades, commanders, and state leaders, and external factors: political and social situation in the state, service conditions and availability of supplies, salary, influence of commanders through their actions, combat operations and their success or failure, presence of ideology and camaraderie within the unit. The moral and psychological state of UNR servicemen during the National Liberation Struggle constantly fluctuated and was unstable, influenced by numerous factors often unrelated to one another. These factors included political causes, material conditions and participation in combat with limited equipment, and combat-related factors. Ideological foundations in the UNR Army existed in the form of bans on the Russian language and profanity, the presence of Cossacks who explained to mobilized soldiers “why and for which Ukraine they must fight,” the introduction of traditions in individual military units, and the establishment of an oath at the state level. However, this did not reach the level of a full-fledged state ideology that could explain to a nationally underdeveloped multi-million Ukrainian population why the state should exist and what differentiated the ideas offered by the Ukrainian authorities from those of others. Our study provides a general understanding of the factors that influenced the moral and psychological state of UNR soldiers and reveals the MPS of individual fighters who remained devoted to the ideas of an independent Ukraine, while the vast majority of Ukrainians and the world continued their ordinary lives. However, a vast area of research remains unexplored – specifically, the study of the Ukrainian Galician Army. Our study leaves broad prospects for further work in the field of interdisciplinary research – a combination of social psychology and military history. Analysis of other sources will allow us to understand new details for the study of this type of problem: changes in the moral and psychological state of individual military units, peasant anti-Bolshevik rebels, and how individuals reacted and explained for themselves the changes that occurred personally and with others.
