EN : The passive voice in modern English represents a multifaceted grammatical and communicative phenomenon situated at the intersection of morphology, syntax, and pragmatics. It functions as a marked member of the verbal opposition, allowing speakers to shift attention from the agent to the patient of an action. The choice of passive constructions is determined by a combination of semantic, pragmatic, and syntactic factors: semantically, it emphasizes the patient and the result of an action and shifts perspective from the agent to the object. Pragmatically, it enables defocusing or omission of the agent, thematic highlighting of the patient, cohesion of the discourse, euphemistic usage, and the establishment of neutral or formal tone. Syntactically, it depends on verb transitivity, type of complement, and structural limitations affecting argument arrangement in the sentence. In Oscar Wilde’s play passive forms are actively employed in the speech of characters who navigate social and moral pressures, reflecting the influence of external forces on personal behavior and choices. Semantically motivated passives reveal the interplay of activity and passivity in human existence, while the most common way of expressing the agent is through prepositional phrases with “by,” which can refer to an individual, a collective, or an abstract force, further adding philosophical to the narrative. This study demonstrates that the passive voice is a multifunctional instrument used for controlling information flow, creating textual cohesion, highlighting intended meaning, and achieving specific stylistic effects. Its analysis in literary discourse provides insights into the interaction of grammatical form, offering practical implications for teaching English, literary analysis, and translation studies.
