The usage of medical abbreviations as a part of English medical term system
has been theoretically substantiated and practically developed. The content of
medical abbreviation in modern medical life as a part of English medical term
system has been detailed.
The system of arrangement of medical abbreviations as the part of English
term system has been created. The effectiveness of the suggested system has been
verified and proved practically. It has been proved that the arranging of a certain
system of medical abbreviations creates better perception visually and aurally for
doctors and medical staff. It fixes the easiest, the shortest and the most capacious
structures through medical discourse.
An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase. It usually, but not
always, consists of a letter or group of letters taken from the word or phrase. The
main object of our research is detailed analysis of modern abbreviations of medical
terminology, their classification, based on the material of up-to day periodical
publications and dictionaries.
Apart from the common form of shortening one word, there are other types
of abbreviations. These include acronym and initialism (including three-letter
acronyms), apocope, clipping, elision, syncope, syllabic abbreviation, and
portmanteau. Syllabic abbreviation (SA) is an abbreviation formed from initial
syllables of several words, but should be distinguished from portmanteaux.

Предмет дослідження – структурні, семантичні, стилістичні, функціональні та національно-специфічні характеристики медичних абревіатур як засобу виявлення особливостей англійської мовної картини світу.
Мета роботи: вивчення властивостей англійських медичних абревіатур як частини медичної терміносистеми англійської мови.
Теоретико-методологічні засади: ключові положення досліджень явища абревіатури (І. Арнольд, О. П. Кононенко, Ю. Г. Кочарян, С. Кісіль та ін.), терміносистеми (І. Гальперін, Г. Г.Еремкіна, Л.В.Дубровіна, С. І. Балишин та ін.).
Отримані результати: абревіатура представляє собою одиницю, що є результатом процесу скорочення. З точки зору структурного розмежування абревіатури представлені класами акронімів, ініціалізмів, усічень, зрощень та гібридів. Усередині системи медичної лексики абревіатури можуть вступати в парадигматичні відношення, серед яких ми виділяємо синонімію, антонімію, омонімію і полісемію. За тематичним принципом нами були виділені 12 груп абревіатур: анатомічні структури; фізіологічні показники, клінічні прояви; мікробіологічні категорії; фізичні, біохімічні та фармакологічні чинники; лікувальні та діагностичні процедури; медичне обладнання, статус, посада медичного працівника і статус хворого; організації та наукові товариства; лікувальні установи, а також їхня інфраструктура; сертифікати, документи, програми, стандарти.
